Well that looks familiar…

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

etsysold.jpgI was cruising Etsy tonight… viewing recently listed items, then I switched to recently sold because it’s fun to see what others are buying.  I’m scrolling along and thought – jeez, those earrings look familiar… duh – they were mine and just sold while I was looking, LOL.

It was a pretty good sale day for me today… the earrings, more ribbons and a mixed media painting at a weekend gallery show.  Yippee!  Christmas is approaching fast and I feel like I’m missing the sales.  Teenage boys are so hard to buy for – and so expensive to buy for.

Tokyo here I come!

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

Well my art anyway….

I got a really nice letter from Joei Lau, a caligraphy & paper artist in Tokyo, inviting me to participate in her Red bind-it-all book swap.  I couldn’t be more thrilled or excited!  Of course I told her I would do it, so I have a month to plan and make 30 pages for this swap.  They can be the same or different, any media style – so I’m excited to incorporate some digital design in there, and theme is my choice also – as long as features red as the prominent color.

It funny that it’s the color red.  I’m not a big fan of red… I don’t have anything red, decorate with red, etc.  Until just recently when I chose red balls for my trees – very strange of me.  Since then red is popping itself into my face all over the place.  When I heard the theme of the page exchange is red, for the book, I knew I had to do it – it’s a sign.

Time travel through music

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

I think it’s fair that I warn you that this post is very personal for me, and highly emotional. I’m blogging it because it helps me release it.

The great chef Mario understands the power of music.

It’s amazing how hearing just those first few notes of a song can transport you, INSTANTLY to a moment in time. Last Sunday my husband and I drove to Eugene to get out of the house and on the way back we found a station that was playing all the ‘old favorites’ from our past. “One Headlight” from the Wallflowers, came on the radio. Instantly I was back in Marina del Rey, on our sailboat drinking margaritas with my best friend Wendy. We spent pretty much every day sunning ourselves on the deck of the boat, laughing our guts out, flashing the helicopters, and just living some of the best moments of our friendship. That song was on the radio, non-stop during that time…. so whenever I hear it, I refer to it as “the boat song” as it takes me back to those years on our sailboat.

So I’m the car and I’m all excited to hear my song… my “anthem” of the good times past…. and I’m all prepared to sing along, as I have countless times before. You know those songs you have sang a million times, so it mindlessly comes out without any effort of remembering the words. Those first few notes play and I start to sing. The very first 3 lines come out:
“So long ago, I don’t remember when
That’s when they say I lost my only friend
Well they said she died easy of a broken heart disease”

Oh my God – the tears came flooding down my face in a rush like the water from Niagra Falls. The sound the stopped, the words stopped, it felt like the earth stopped. Years ago, I lost her, my best friend Wendy, my true soul sister, my partner in crime. Gone are the days of lounging on the boat deck with her – as she suddenly died, years back, just a few short days after giving birth to her 4th child. Just like that. Her aorta exploded because she had Marfan’s Syndrome, and the birth of her child put too much stress on her heart.

I’ve sang that song a million times and it just hit me like a brick. F*ck.

Gingerbread House Under Glass

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

gingerbread house under glassI’m so excited…. I just finished my gingerbread house. I have snoopy kitties that might sneak a lick, so I found a great, large glass dome at the Pottery Barn to put it under, and it fits like it was made for it! The house is a kit from Trader Joe’s. It came with the pre-baked gingerbread panels, hand piped icing people & a cat, and it’s lovingly made in Germany. The icing woman reminds me of my Mama (my Hungarian grand-mother…. she wore a handkerchief over her head too… like in “the old country” she used to say.) Cute! So anyway… all I had to do was make the icing, assemble the house and decorate – great fun on a windy day.

Click on any of the pics to see them larger.close up of gingerbread house under glass

I found chocolate rocks for the pathway. I sugared tree and wreath after icing them for a little extra sparkle.

What cookie cabin in the snow would be complete without a pond for skating? If you look real close you might see that I made a figure eight in the ice, because icing people are fabulous figure skaters!

I forgot to take pics of the back, so I’ll upload those later.

Not a snow day, a hurricane day!

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

We got up and did our usual morning routine and headed out the door, but the streets looked like a ghost town and all the schools were closed because of a hurricane warning. Winds gusting above 125mph, intense rain, and swelling seas wash into the shore. Lots of power lost… our has gone off and on all day. Here’s a local news story. We are pretty lucky in Florence actually…. the rest of the coast seems to have lots of damage.

My name is Tracy, and I’m a snow stalker.

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

I have my list of web cams that point to various areas where I used to live in Canada… and I watch for any signs of white on the ground. I refresh the pages, excitedly watching falling snow and wishing it were here, instead of the wet wet rain. The wind and rain come in sheets that blow sideways and well… quite frankly… it bites. So I pray to dear Jack Frost to make it colder and colder so the snow can fall and put a beautiful blanket over our town.

This is our sweet Emma…. with visions of sugar plums…. or maybe sugar mice, dancing in her little fluffy head.

Dreaming of sugar plums

Weather update : My hopes for snow are squashed.  We have a high wind warning in effect… to be gusting up to 100 mph and a high surf warning for flooding.  Uggh, not the kind of winter storm I had in mind.
