Just call me Itchy Scratchy

Monday, February 26th, 2007

The weirdest stuff happens to me…. Today was day 2 1/2 of having a crazy rash all over my chest, shoulders, back, neck, face, eyebrows, arms and scalp. Oh and it’s even on the insides of my eye lids and lower lash according to my doctor. Jeepers. I am apparently having some extreme reaction to ‘something’.
I don’t have a clue what it is that I got into contact with. The last time I had a reaction this bad was when we added cedar chips to raku fire, about 6 years ago. I totally forgot about that, but I guess it was in my ‘record’. He asked me what I was concocting now, lol. Drat, nothing as fun as raku…. just painting with the usual supplies. So now I’m all jacked up on prednisone for the inflammation and swelling and clarinex for the itchy itches. Needless to say I didn’t go to work today – I would have scared the customers away looking like a puffy measle patient! Instead I continued to paint the day away, trying to get a bit of art to hang for my upcoming show at the gallery.
I’ll be the guest artist for the month of March at the River Gallery in Old Town Florence, OR. They are hosting a reception for me this Saturday from 1-3 pm … I should be rash free by then, lol.

So excited

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

I’m starting to make little piles all over the house, of things I want to pack for my trip to Canada, to see my boys. I’m taking up soap supplies so my sister and I can play, kitchen gadgets for Trevor’s new apartment, art supplies, camera….. I need to leave room for clothes. I’m sure no matter how much stuff I jam into my suitcase – I’ll forget something…. I always do :) As the train starts to roll away – it comes to me…. every time.

The last few days have been spent painting new pictures and trying to keep my headaches at bay. They are getting the best of me and I don’t know why. I’ve eaten healthy food for 2 solid weeks (maybe my bodies going into shock, lol), have gotten rest when I need it, have been making lots of art….. I feel happy, not stressed….except my headaches drive me bonkers.

It’s Rhody Days here in lil’ ol’ Florence Oregon. Our Rhododendron Festival is in full swing. The carnies are here with the games, cotton candy and rides that make you think twice. The Rhody Queen was crowned last night, the craft fair is on today and tomorrow, the car show & cruise with all the old hot rods is tonight, and the streets are filled with thousand and thousands of Harlies. Whenever they ride past the house, my cats come screaming inside and hide under the couch – pretty funny. Tomorrow I’ll go watch the parade with my best friend Amanda – that ought to be a kick! You can drive all the way from one side of town to the other in less than 15 minutes, even stopping for the occasional red light. Not on Rhody weekend though – it can take 15 minutes just to take your turn getting on the main drag. All the old fuddy duddies leave town or stay home and complain about all the people, all the noise. I love it – our little town wakes and parties for days and nights and come Monday morning – it’s all over and you all you can hear is the distant roar of the last Harley leaving town.

Today I see…

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

the rhodies are starting to bloom. Just in time for the Rhody Festival in May. Looks like a perfect spring day – and it would be if my T was home.

Oh and here’s the tree that everyone loves from my old studio friday post… in color. It’s a wax myrtle – it stays green and leafy all year long. It’s a good tree. :)

Hot Pink Lipstick

Monday, February 20th, 2006

My desk sits in front of my window, looking out to the street. My usual view includes the usual cars going by, a ton of birds going to & fro the wax myrtle tree, old guys riding their scooters to Safeway, and the cute neighbor coming and going all day, but the best one was yesterday. There was this petite little woman with snow white hair walking her matching snow white haired dog. She was decked out in the usual Oregon-casual clothes… but what tickled me was her gigantic black sunglasses and her hot pink lipstick. Not bright pink but a pink so hot, so intense, she could guide in airplanes.
I chuckled at first because it was over the top, but kudos to her for getting dolled up to walk her dog. Sporting her Jackie O glasses, she walked that little dog down the street with all the confidence in the world.

Weather … then and now

Saturday, February 11th, 2006
It has been so nice and sunny all week here, but the weeks before that were another story… rain rain rain and more rain. The road to civilization (Eugene) would even close due to the combination of high tides and too much rain. I was cleaning pics of my camera and forgot I had these… just 2 miles out of Florence, on the way to Eugene. We got through just in time before another closure.

This week Amanda and I went for a nice drive up the coast and took these shots:

Letting Go

Friday, January 6th, 2006

Yesterday I made the decision to close my studio. As I try to convince my supportive customers that this a good move for me personaly, I’m trying to convince myself of that too. I have been burdened with the stress of running a business that needs more customers that my little town has to offer. It’s hard, I totally love my actual shop building, I like how I decorated it, I love the view from the front window, looking down the street, but I don’t love the worry of getting through another tough financial winter. So I’m better off right? Now I’ll be free to make and sell my art, which I never had time to do before. And I have so many creative consulting jobs lined up, I’ll be busy for a long time – bringing the creative touch to other businesses around town. It’s a good thing – right? I just have to keep telling myself that. I’m still keeping my web store and I’ll still be teaching workshops at different venues around town. Letting go is hard – but better things are coming, right? (sigh)

The Ramp

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

Sometimes life in a small town is so mundane, so hard, so rural. The same faces, rumors, etc. It can really drive you crazy. Unless you find something magical, something that you can fall back on when down in the dumps, all you think about is getting out.
Last night I stayed late at my shop, cleaning up after Ladies Night. I wasn’t planning on staying, I was just going to throw the bulk of it in the sink and come back the next day, but I enjoyed puttering around, so I kept with it.
After all was neat and tidy I flicked off the lights and closed the door. I have a wheel chair ramp that goes down the side of my shop, towards my parking spot in back and I always walk that way. So on my way down the ramp, I hear it. It honestly stopped me dead in my tracks. The roar of the ocean. I was totally wooed by the thunder of the waves, crashing on the beach. I can hear it every night, but sometimes it just stops me and makes me thankful for where I live. It’s that magic that keeps me hear.
I love walking up and down that ramp beside my store. In the morning, the sound of the birds is almost deafening. I’ve never lived anywhere that has as many birds as Florence. It’s so cheerful and sweet sounding. The perfect way to start the day – and those crashing waves at night – I just love it so much.

Posted by Hello In my little ‘small town USA’, our annual celebration is “Rhody Days” short for Rhododendron, our flower. They grow wild and rampant here. Really pretty.
So, during Rhody Days, our quiet little town fills with thousands of bikers, families, a carnival, street vendors, hot rods, parades, craft shows, car shows, you name it.
It’s coming up May 20th-22nd, so if you are in the area – stop by!!
