Glass domes… under my spell

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

There are certain things that should just not enter my home…. because they always have an untimely death: those being indoor plants and glass domes.

I’ve alway wanted a collection of glass domes, especially old ones, but I can never, ever find them at yard sales or thrift shops, so I have purchased them here and there in stores.  They somehow always end up broken.  My most favorite of all was a huge one I spent way too much money on… and I put it over my gingerbread house last year (keeping it safe from kitty cat tounges) and I forgot it in Canada (took it up there for our Christmas dinner table).  Drat – it broke before they could send it back.  All year went by and then this fall I found a sweet one, that had a mosiac base it sat upon, in the garden center of a local dept. store.  Today it went sailing off the coffee table, at the speed of light, along with picture frames, coffee cups and the bird and nest/eggs that were on display inside it.  Yes, my darling horrible cats were chasing eachother and sailed across the table and took everything with them.  Uugh.

But I didn’t dispair for long…. I looked at this little, naked, mosaic base and could see nothing but the base for my new cage skirt I’ll be making for a new art doll.  Yes – from tragidy came creativity and nothing could have pleased me more because I’ve been fresh out of ideas for months.  I am off to sketch my new ‘garden’ girl out now…. she’ll be just what spring needs to arrive with a bang!

Bumpy Start

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

I’m entering 2009 sick with that nasty sore-throat, head congestion thing.  It’s really taking alot out of me, but it can’t last forever right?  I have no voice, which is proving to be a bit of a challenge for my job, but I’m getting by.

I had a great time in Canada for Christmas.  We drove up on Christmas Eve and it was winter wonderland.

A series in the works

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I think these would make cute illustrations for a kids book – I must have been inspired by sweet baby Ava.

Painted on birch wood, all the outlines have been pain-stakingly burned in, acrylic paint, water color pencil, and paper used also.

Moon…

Sun…

I have two more in sketches that need to be painted (when I can get more wood)…. wind and rain.

A teeny tiny bit of art

Monday, October 13th, 2008

I love these mini canvases!  They are so much fun to paint on – but I gotta say – a tiny painting seems to take just as long as a big one.

Capture: Trio of Silver

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

This week’s challenge on the art*essence blog is silver.  I was surprised how little silver I actually have in my studio.  I came up with paint brush ferrels, the handle to my vintage 3 tier dish (that I use as my table ‘catch all”) and my little fan that I love so much.  Are you going to play along too?  We need more players :)

Blog updates & Letting go

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Blog updates:
I really should know better than to start a blog update at 9pm… I upgraded my version and it went horribly wrong.  I thought I was being smart by downloading a back-up copy, was but not smart enough to test it.  When the version upgrade took a tanker, I went to restore and my back-up had an error and was useless.  I spent till 5am this morning trying to fix it and ended up paying $30 to my server for use of their back-up copy and found out, they saved it just as I screwed it up!  They don’t offer refunds for failed attempts, so I’m out the 30 bucks and had to re-intall, export, import, and re-upload myself.  Obviously I don’t make smart money decisions after midnight, lol.  That’s why I don’t watch late night infomercials ;)

I’m digg’n my new theme… I’m tweaking the pics to make it my own (like adding the raven), and will be doing more this weekend, if my eyes regain focus after staying up all night.  After going to bed at 5, I had to be up by 7 to get my kid out the door to work, and of course I couldn’t fall back asleep.  I’m feeling a good afternoon nap coming on :)

Letting go:
I have decided to let go of my “Fly Free” assemblage box.  It’s on etsy.  I put it up there last night, and now I’m feeling regret, but that’s ok.  I need to let go of more stuff I create, otherwise how will it ever get out there in the world?  I have recent paintings from my Suzy Blu class that I have no room for too.  I love them, but I’ve told myself that if I don’t have wall space, I must free it from sitting on a shelf.  Got any space for art that needs a good great home?  Check out my Etsy page if you want a little piece of my artful soul.

So happy

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I’m so happy that I’m in Suzi’s class…. I’m not only getting so much out of it, but it’s giving me the reason/excuse to get some studio time in.

Check out my slide show of the steps in creating a painting on the birch plywood.  CLICK HERE for the”full screen” version to get the best view.

And this one, waiting for a few more layers and some beeswax:
